FISA

July 9, 2008

If you follow politics in the U.S. you that Congress is set to give our President the power to illegally wiretap American citizens.  Breaking the 4th amendment is unacceptable and Senators voting to approve this is unacceptable.  Wikipedia has a good article.  I whipped up a quick comic to express how the whole idea comes across.

I also find articles such as this deplorable. My favoriteleast favorite line is “Currently, FBI agents need specific reasons — like evidence or allegations that a law probably has been violated — to investigate U.S. citizens and legal residents”.

I can’t wait to vote.

disk image

June 6, 2008

Dear lazy web.

I am going to install a new system (Debian and some embedded timesys Linux) and I would like to back it up in a smart, quick way.  Ideally, I would like to do a disk image or something like that.  A network backup (rsync) wouldn’t be bad but I’m looking for a fast, easy and reliable way of backing up.  I would be willing to sacrifice fast, but it needs to be easy and reliable…anyways, whats the best bet?

Samsung u3

May 25, 2008

I recently got a Sumsung YP U3 based on the suggestion of various commentors.  I connect it to the Hardy partition I have (2.6.20-16-generic kernel due to a bug in wireless in the Hardy kernel) and the media player won’t mount.

If anyone knows how to fix this, let me know…thanks

I used the Rhythmbox MTP plugin and installed libmtp-dev (though I think the latter didn’t have anything to do with the problem)  and the problem is no more.  \o/

Laptop

May 18, 2008

Dear Lazy web,

I’m looking for a laptop in the 700 – 850 (UDS) dollar range for mostly daily use. It would be used for taking notes in class, doing data analysis in the lab, light coding and web surfing. It would not be used for intense gaming or anything but I need something that is Linux compatible out of the box and preferably, Microsoft-tax free. Also, I would like it to be delived within two weeks of ordering.

I am leaning heavily toward this System 76 machine but would like a range of options. Thanks.

A few notes

April 25, 2008

Kubuntu 8.04 is released. \o/! Seems like getting the remix of Kubuntu with KDE4 is a hard sell right now. I can’t seem to get a link and bitTorrent is not allowed at my school (its too much to allow students to legally do things apparently)

Xubuntu 8.04 is out. See the Release Notes for more details. It seems there isn’t a mention to the very, very sexy documentation that is included in the release. Jim Campbell had a lot to do with writing the great documentation.

Lastly, make sure to hit up the Chicago LoCo Hardy Release Party. It should be a good time. This Saturday April 26th from 2pm to 5pm. Just make sure to stay away from the characters like Kevin Harriss, I know he’ll be trying to push Foresight Linux down people’s throats. 😛 I wish I could attend the release party but I will be in Iowa at that time. Also, make sure to RSVP if you are attending.
